WITH “picture perfect” weather, Italians gathered by the hundreds for the sixth Brisbane celebration of the Feast of the Three Saints – Alfio, Cirino and Filadelfo – last Sunday May 4 in Wooloowin.
Northside Italian community chaplain Scalabrinian Father Mauro Conte presided at the Eucharist to start the day’s activities.
He was joined by parish priest Fr Richard Pascoe and Fr Paul Rooney.
Considering it “an honour to be the main celebrant”, Fr Conte said the event lived up to expectations.
“The committee worked hard to organise everything and the day was very well attended with perfect weather,” he said.
A highlight of the Mass for many was the inclusion of a brass band, offering a traditional Italian tune, “Cantata”, during the “kissing of the relics”.
The Choir of St Alfio, named in honour of the eldest of the three brothers, was in fine voice.
After Mass those gathered were offered an array of Italian delicacies and entertainment before walking through streets around Holy Cross Church with statues of the three saints.
Children, dressed traditionally, particularly enjoyed the procession.
Brisbane Three Saints Committee president Giuseppe Vitale, who has had a special devotion to the brothers since childhood after receiving “a spiritual gift”, said he was “very happy” with the celebrations.
Saints Alfio, Cirino and Filadelfo were martyred in Lentini, Italy, in 253.
