MP hit by abortion campaign

CATHOLIC Labor MP Ronan Lee has accused a concerted campaign by pro-abortionists of trying to defeat him in the Queensland election on February 7.

Mr Lee said a group called the Coalition to Legalise Abortion mounted a strong campaign to have him ousted as Member for Indooroopilly, but as counting continued to decide the winner of the seat, he was confident he would be re-elected.

Indooroopilly, along with Clayfield, Charters Towers and Kawana electorates were cliff-hangers in an election that had the Labor Government returned with the loss of only a handful of seats.

Mr Lee, who has been outspoken on pro-life issues, said pro-abortionists handed out how to vote cards urging a Green vote.

Ironically, Green preferences looked like they would help Mr Lee over the line.

Among other Catholic MPs, re-elected Labor Member for Stafford, Terry Sullivan, said it was a remarkable win for his party.

‘I think it will mean a strong, stable Government,’ he said. ‘The emphasis will be on education and health and child protection, as the Premier promised.’

National Party Member for Toowoomba South, Mike Horan, said while the loss was disappointing, sitting National Party members ‘did exceptionally well’.

Mr Horan said the Coalition would form a stronger Opposition this term.

National Party Member for Gregory, Vaughan Johnson, said he was pleased with the support the Nationals gained in rural and regional Queensland where he believed the majority of people voted against the Government’s proposed reforms on land clearing, and decisions on country racing, the ambulance levy, health services and road funding.
