MARGARET Kelleher has stitched up a milestone she never thought possible.
The 76-year-old grandmother from Ipswich recently finished sewing her 6000th patchwork blanket for the St Vincent de Paul Society.
She has devoted the past 18 years to making the blankets that keep the less fortunate warm during cold Ipswich winters.
Mrs Kelleher, a mother of six and a member of St Joseph’s Parish, North Ipswich, began making the patchwork blankets for the St Vincent de Paul Society in 1987.
And the dedicated seamstress has no plans to stop at 6000 blankets.
The blankets are sold by the St Vincent de Paul Society for $15 each, and where deemed necessary they are given to the needy for free.
After making 5000 blankets, Mrs Kelleher received a community service award from the then Governor-General Sir William Deane.
Mrs Kelleher plans to continue making the blankets for those who need them for as long as she is able.
