ALMOST 20,000 brown scapulars of Our Lady of Mt Carmel are being offered for free by a group that has made more than 100,000 rosary beads and 60,000 scapulars over more than a decade.
The group of volunteers started making them after attending a Universal Rosary Bouquet at the Marian Valley Shrine near Canungra, in the Gold Coast hinterland.
Group convenor and founding member Regina O’Shaughnessy said there were about 19,000 excess scapulars that had not been sent overseas and were available to Australians.
The group started producing the religious items 13 years ago and sending them for free mainly to Third World countries, as a way of spreading devotion to the Rosary and the scapular.
Traditionally those who wear a scapular and practise a special devotion to Mary are assured of salvation.
Mrs O’Shaughnessy said a woman from Esperance, Western Australia, made the bulk of the scapulars with her family also funding a large proportion of the cost.
For your free scapular send a stamped self-addressed envelope to Regina O’Shaughnessy, 25 Lyell St, Sunnybank, Qld 4109.
