WHEN it comes to chess, 10 year-old Alannah Byrne knows a few good moves.

The keen chess player from Our Lady of Mt Carmel School, Coorparoo, on Brisbane’s southside, is about to embark on a trip overseas to compete in the World Youth Chess Championships in Bat’umi, Georgia during October.

Alannah, who is the Australian girls’ under 10 rapid champion and joint winner of the Queensland girls’ under 10 champion, is the only Brisbane representative and one of only three Queenslanders competing in the world championships.

Alannah and her family have been fundraising to help her get to Georgia.

Her mum, Donna, said among the fundraisers, Alannah had been making dragonflies out of Scoobies to sell at school.
