ASHGROVE parishioner Greg O’Dowd’s life of devotion to his family, faith and community was remembered at his funeral on March 21, after he was struck by a car while crossing Waterworks Rd, in Brisbane’s west.
Mr O’Dowd, 72, was on his way to church when the accident happened near the intersection with Ashgrove Ave at about 6am on March 14.
His son, Bernie, said the funeral was celebrated by retired Fr Vince Hobbs in St Finbarr’s, the Ashgrove church that had been the cornerstone of his father’s life for more than 40 years.
Mr O’Dowd was a special eucharistic minister, parish councillor and a member of the Knights of the Southern Cross.
He was also a committee member and director of the Bardon Parish Credit Union for 30 years.
Road safety awareness became a vital part of Mr O’Dowd’s life after an accident claimed his son Laurence’s life at Bardon in December 1991.
He had also campaigned to make Waterworks Rd safer.
Mr O’Dowd is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carmel, and children Greg Jr, Mary Rose, Monica, Bernie and David.
