A QUEENSLAND Catholic Labor senator has urged pro-life supporters to become more heavily involved in major political parties and the mainstream Churches to be more vocal in public debate.
Senator John Hogg was speaking at the annual national Right to Life conference in Melbourne on July 13. His theme was ‘Defending life as a Christian politician’.
Senator Hogg said pro-life supporters had to ‘become embedded in the party and parliamentary processes … to act as a catalyst for change’ in furthering their causes.
He said the debate on pro-life issues was not simply won on the floor of parliament.
‘The pro-life debate is won by the way public opinion is formed and the belief patterns/values that people hold,’ he said.
‘This requires a sophisticated, targeted and co-ordinated approach as well as a long, hard slog of reinforcing the sanctity of life when life is constantly subject to devaluation.’
Senator Hogg said lack of support, directly or indirectly, from mainstream Christian Churches was one of the difficulties facing the Christian politician.
