TEDDY Bears, flowers and flags will be aboard a Flotilla of Hope bound for Nauru as a sign of support from Brisbane schools and parishes for asylum seekers in detention.
The Ecumenical Social Justice Group of the Western Suburbs (ESJGWS) of Brisbane has rallied support for the flotilla, which will be farewelled from Brisbane on May 23.
One of the yachts, ‘One Off’, is from Brisbane and the other, ‘Eureka’, has come from Sydney.
Members of the social justice group will be at a barbecue picnic and farewell for the flotilla by the river at New Farm Park from noon-2pm.
The flotilla will set sail for Nauru to extend the hand of hope and friendship across the Pacific to the 264 refugee claimants in Australia’s island detention centre in Nauru.
The flotilla aims to highlight the plight of the asylum seekers and will carry supplies for them.
ESJGWS president Valerie Whitehead said the group had appealed to parishes and schools for teddy bears to send to the 70 children still in detention on Nauru.
Students at Mt St Michael’s College, Ashgrove made paper flowers, bunting and cards to send to the children.
