YOUNG people from St Paschal’s parish, Wavell Heights started the year on a high note at their first youth Mass for 2002 on February 2.
The group, which has been going for more than 17 years, organised the Mass and contributed singers, instrumentalists, readers and eucharistic ministers to the celebration.
Parish priest Gerry Kalinowski celebrated the Mass and liturgical input came from Josephite Sister Anne Bond.
Youth group co-ordinator Angela Cockburn said: ‘We had a saxophone and flute accompanying the singers. Sometimes we can get clarinets, snare drums, violins and a double bass.
‘It was a really nice evening and the 15 young people who were involved were very enthusiastic.’
Carmel Massingham organised the musical side of the Mass and played the organ.
After the youth Mass, the young people got together for some food and drink and other activities.
A car wash has been organised for March 3.
‘That starts us financially for the year,’ Angela said.
Last year, the young people decided to donate all their fundraising money to a small village in Papua New Guinea called Ningil.
‘A sports afternoon is also being organised,’ said Angela, ‘as well as a progressive dinner where the young people walk to different parish houses and start with dessert and work their way up to entre’.
