YOUTH of St Anthony’s, Alexandra Hills have been artistically preparing for the JCI (Journey of the Cross and Icon) visit in their parish on August 25 by making their own Cross.
The visit, from 1pm to 5pm, will include a concert in the parish grounds.
Parishioner Jane Holland said young people from each of the seven parishes in the Redland/Bayside Deanery have “been busy planning the event and will participate in all aspects on the day”.
“The deanery invites people of all ages and faiths to share in this amazing opportunity to welcome and touch the Cross and Icon,” she said.
Patrons are asked to bring chairs and rugs for the gathering with refreshments available for purchase.
The World Youth Day Cross was given to the youth of the world in 1984 by the late Pope John Paul ll.
Since then the Cross has made its way around the world several times, throughout Europe, behind the Iron Curtain and to parts of America, Asia and Africa.
In February, 2002, the Cross was taken to “Ground Zero” in New York while in April this year, it arrived in the Solomon Islands just 14 days after a tsunami hit.
Together with the Icon of Mary, the Cross is currently touring all Australian dioceses in preparation for next year’s World Youth Day in Sydney.
The JCI continues in Brisbane until August 29.
