A Melbourne girl is revelling in the glory of coming second in a worldwide prose/poetry competition for the Year of Great Jubilee.
Jessica Healy’s poem “Breathe” was the national entry submitted by the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference in the competition’s pre-adolescent category, Years 7-9 section. She is a student at Santa Maria College, Northcote, in Melbourne.
Chairman of the Bishops’ Committee for the Great Jubilee, Brisbane Auxiliary Bishop Michael Putney, reported screams and cries of delight when he informed Jessica of her win.
Her principal, Margaret Leahy, also said she was ‘absolutely delighted’ with Jessica’s achievement.
Ms Leahy said Jessica, who overcame cancer as a younger child, is extremely skilled in the classroom as well as being an outstanding singer and is also extremely attentive and responsive to the needs of other students.
