ROCKHAMPTON’S young people responded enthusiastically to Bishop Brian Heenan’s invitation to celebrate World Youth Day with him at St Joseph’s Cathedral on April 4.
Many regional centres, including Bundaberg, Mackay and Gladstone, organised buses, with some travelling more than four hours to be part of the celebrations.
Gladstone’s NET Ministries team broke the ice for many, who were meeting for the first time, through games and music.
Participants helped prepare a World Youth Day Mass with each region taking responsibility for particular aspects and a large orchestra and choir leading everyone through the celebration.
Diocesan youth ministry co-ordinator Brent Lammas spoke of the generosity and enthusiasm of all involved.
‘One of the great things about this diocese is our ability to work together across significant distances,’ he said.
‘This celebration not only showed how much talent our young people have but also their great desire to make faith something alive and relevant in their lives.’
Bishop Heenan urged the young people to go on searching for Jesus in the words of the Gospel, ‘We wish to see Jesus.’
He reminded them that to accept the friendship of Jesus could be quite demanding, but assured them they would never have a more loyal and faithful friend.
At the celebration’s conclusion, Bishop Heenan thanked the young people for attending and expressed his desire that the diocese be represented at the next international gathering in Cologne, Germany on August 16-21, 2005.
