WHILE he may share the McDonald’s name, World Youth Day pilgrim Scott McDonald’s suggestion of “dressing up” for a fast food hit went down a treat.
Travelling home from Sydney in July, the Brisbane East Deanery member made the suggestion “jokingly” at first.
“During a quiet moment on the bus trip home … Scott suggested it would be funny if we all got dressed in formal gear and went to McDonald’s for dinner,” said Ciara Retford.
“All of a sudden the whole bus had been informed of the idea.”
Five weeks later on August 23, more than 40 young people dined at McDonald’s Cannon Hill in a specially set aside area.
Each participant paid $20 for a value meal, sundae and a coffee or hot chocolate with the remaining funds donated to Ronald McDonald House.
The event had a significant prelude.
“Like every formal there was a ‘pre’, where 25 young people went to Mass at St Thomas’s, Camp Hill,” Ciara said.
Diners even continued after McDonald’s in the Cannon Hill parish hall for “a few rounds of Sing Star”.
Brisbane East Deanery co-ordinator Christian Nobleza was a key organiser along with Scott McDonald and Emma Price of Bulimba parish.
