MY husband Sean sees himself as “a man with a mission”.
A year ago his mission was to stay alive during brain surgery to remove a tumour.
Fortunately he achieved that goal even though Sydney neurosurgeon Dr Charles Teo said there was a moment when his patient was “dying on the operating table”.
Sean’s subsequent mission was to share his story of challenge and reward with young people in the Church, a category in which he still considers himself a member.
He carried out that goal at various Catholic youth events in Brisbane post surgery and throughout his recovery, with his usual humour.
More recently, following six weeks of radiotherapy, Sean has set himself another challenge.
He has decided to follow Dr Teo to Peru as part of a trek through the Inca Trail to the lost city of Machu Picchu for 16 days from October 30.
The experience, organised by “Inspired Adventures” in Sydney, has meant that our family has committed to raising at least $7500.
Some of these funds will go directly towards Dr Teo’s research initiative, The Cure for Life Foundation, which is working on a cure for the condition, while other monies will help fund the trip.
Sean, who hasn’t been in paid employment for more over than a year, is thrilled to add Machu Picchu to his list of “mission” destinations.
I absolutely can’t wait … it’s something I never would have done if it weren’t for the tumor … plus the support I have experienced through family and friends is just awesome,” he said.
We have been busy organising chocolate drives, garage sales and raffles to come up with the funds with their main initiative a Comedy Night at The Full Moon Hotel, Sandgate, on August 25.
The night will be an opportunity for Sean’s comedic talents to shine through while revealing more about his very personal ordeal.
We have been generously supported in our fundraising efforts by The Full Moon Hotel and St Kieran’s school, where the elder of our two daughters, Gabriella, is in Prep.
Several businesses have donated prizes for the event. For more information contact the Harris family on (07) 3865 2930.
