THERE’S no shortage of prayer among Catholics for Christ (CFC) in Brisbane and particularly among its youth.
“Revive”, in January, and “Emerge”, in February, were CFC initiatives all about “giving praise to God”, organiser Joey Hizon, of Pine Rivers parish, said.
“‘Revive’ was a really empowering night,” he said.
A crowd of 250, of mixed ages, gathered at Bowen Hills and heard an address from new Kenmore parish priest Fr Francis Onwunali who encouraged a continued commitment to faith.
Joey said attendees came from each of the CFC Youth for Christ groups of Browns Plains, Inala, Bray Park (Pine Rivers), Coorparoo, Loganholme and the Gold Coast.
He described the “Emerge” night as “an opportunity for young people to showcase talents and to thank God for talents” through “worship, skits, hip-hop dancing and acoustic duets”.
“Emerge” was held to help raise funds for youth camps, retreats and other prayer experiences for Youth for Christ.
It was held at Aspley with about 250 attending.
Joey and his wife Juanita are committed leaders of Youth for Christ in Bray Park despite being parents of five-year-old Isaiah and one-year-old Noah.
“It’s pretty busy,” Joey said of their lives.
“But Juanita and I realised that some young people don’t have anyone to look up to in a spiritual way.
“I didn’t have when I was younger … so we made the commitment.”
Joey, a guitarist, has the scripture reference of John 3:16 tattooed on his arm.
When asked about it, he said the bible reference (“For God so loved the world he gave His only Son …”) “really changed” him.
The 31-year-old has been involved with Youth for Christ since he was 18 and a leader for two years.
“I just leave everything up to God,” he said.
