HUNDREDS of young people brought Christ’s Jubilee message to the streets of Melbourne’s city centre during a Palm Sunday procession and Way of the Cross.
Archbishop George Pell and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Grech accompanied those who made the pilgrimage from St Augustine’s Church in Bourke St, through the Bourke St Mall and on to St Patrick’s Cathedral.
Pilgrims carrying palms followed a large wooden cross along the route, singing songs, and stopping at various locations to pray the Stations of the Cross.
The pilgrimage ended with Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral where about 1000 young people and others had the opportunity to meet the conditions for the Jubilee Year indulgence, passing through the designated Holy Doors for the archdiocese.
Organisers from Melbourne’s Catholic Youth Ministry hailed the success of the Jubilee 2000 event with numbers increasing substantially from last year’s Palm Sunday walk.
The Palm Sunday celebrations concluded with a sausage sizzle and entertainment by the Blue Stone Youth Club.
