Mover and Shakers camp packs a punch

THE annual Movers and Shakers youth leadership training camp again proved popular for Catholic youth leaders throughout Queensland.

The week-long program from April 13-18 was held at Peregian on the Sunshine Coast, and attracted 81 small group leaders and other young people from across Queensland, with some travelling from as far as Sydney.

The program provides affordable, high quality leadership training for young people in a safe and fun environment and is an opportunity for 16-25 year-olds to support and network with others involved in the Church.

Movers and Shakers is led by a team of youth ministry professionals, facilitated by Greg Smith.

Griffith University student Jill Pocock, who attended the program for the second time, said she was lucky to be involved in the ‘unbelievable leadership program’ and found the experience of being a small group facilitator a different one from the previous year, when she attended as a participant.

‘I found Movers and Shakers 2004 to be an amazing way to connect with a diverse range of people all sharing the similar connection of faith,’ she said.

‘It was extremely rewarding to be able to see the growth of others and myself while we journeyed together and bonded strong friendships.’ Activities ranged from drama and juggling workshops to problem solving activities, group building exercises, low ropes courses, inspirational presentations, intense bead making, meditation and liturgies.

Jill said she felt the experience had helped her build her leadership skills as well as strengthen her faith.

‘I think that Movers and Shakers was extremely powerful for myself and others to strengthen our beliefs and faith in God.

‘I encourage anyone who is considering participating next year to give it a go and stick their neck out and be part of a program which is truly one of a kind.’
