BY the time the kayaks entered Nudgee Beach waters and those on foot set out for the 14km hike, the sunshine – in a week of dreary weather – also spurred Banyo Nundah parish youth and their supporters for the July 14 “PedalYak”.
It was a fundraising effort to support the group’s Samoan missionary trip in January 2013.
Youth and their family members and friends as well as parishioners set out after a hot breakfast.
They were supported by the presence of members of Australian Catholic University’s (ACU) Banyo’s “Wired” radio program.
“It’s not a race,” key helper Helen Gambley told those on foot and bikes, numbering more than 50.
On-line donations, sponsorship and other giving helped to raise more than $3000.
“Tremendous” was the way organiser Jack Greathead, who kayaked with his children Michael and Bridget, described the commitment of those who took part.
“Rain or shine, we were going ahead, but it was great to see the sun come out over the ‘golden sands’ of Nudgee,” he said.
