PARISHES in Brisbane South Deanery have held a number of events in recent months to promote youth and children’s ministries.
A Night of Entertainment, an annual talent contest was held at St Bernard’s Parish, Upper Mt Gravatt, for youth groups, friends and families last month.
About 20 acts performed on September 15 in the Fr Aspinall Centre and included gymnastics, bands, solo and group singing, skits, comedy, dancing, family acts, solo acts, duets and even one young man playing the trumpet and piano at the same time.
On July 21-23, the St Bernard’s Crossroads (Year 10-12 Youth Group) retreat, Weekend Warriors, was held at Brookfield.
The young people spent the weekend learning, discussing and reflecting on four topics – “Bible Warriors”, “Faith Warriors”, “Church Warriors” and “Mission Warriors” – with guest speaker Steven Price from the St Vincent de Paul Society.
He looked at ways young people can get involved in their parish and through the archdiocese.
This led the Crossroads group to take on a special mission for Samaritan’s Purse called “Operation Christmas Child”, which allowed them to network through their parish youth groups and schools and look into starting a youth based St Vincent de Paul group.
Discussions were held on the various elements that influence youth spirituality and living one’s faith.
On July 2, a Mass wrapped up a successful KidsGames week during the winter school holidays at St Catherine’s Parish, Wishart.
More than 150 children, families, friends and parishioners attended the Mass.
