Freaky night out for Emmanuel Outreach

‘FREAKY dancing, freaky clothes and plenty of freaks for Jesus’ were all the rage at Emmanuel Youth Outreach’s second FireStarter event for the year on May 24.

The youth event, held at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, centred on the theme ‘Freak’ and combined music, drama and multimedia.

The FireStarter Band had the crowd jumping before Brisbane band Propane introduced ‘fresh and savvy’ sounds to keep them on their feet.

Teresa Delsorte, a regular FireStarter patron, said the atmosphere was great.

‘It’s a teenager-friendly environment where you can have fun and go crazy to the music,’ she said.

During the night Brisbane youths Marianna Taylor and Max Vickerson told the audience about their experiences of God in their lives.

Max said he wanted to share his own experience to inspire the faithful to stay strong and to encourage those who have fallen away to turn to God for help.

‘I grew up in a strong Catholic family, but I resented having religion forced on me and went off and did my own thing, and started drinking and using drugs,’ he said.

‘At my darkest moment, when my plans had fallen apart, I had an experience of God.

‘I reached out to God through prayer and he lifted me out of my problems.’
