THE issue of detention centres and asylum seekers is expected to generate considerable debate at the next Spirituality in the Pub night in Brisbane on Monday, July 2.
Mary Gavin who works with refugees and is a passionate advocate of their just treatment is the guest speaker at the session, to be held in Patrick’s Bar at Dooley’s Hotel in Fortitude Valley from 7.30pm.
Ms Gavin, who works at the archdiocesan Centre for Multicultural Pastoral Care, said the evening would probably be a bit of an eye-opener for her.
“There has been a lot of publicity of late, the whole issue is extremely topical. There has also been a lot of bad publicity on a lot of things. A lot of suggestions rather than fact.”
“Here in Brisbane we have had about 1500 refugees from the detention centres come through since March last year. I can share what those people have told us, and what we believe should happen.”
Spirituality in the Pub is an initiative of the Young Adult Ministry at Brisbane Catholic Education.
