DAVE Jorna and “Ollie” the rubber chicken from Project Hatch popped up again on the youth scene last month.
Brisbane archdiocese’s Ethnic Youth Ministry Council (EYMC) sent them along to a youth retreat on November 6 at the Vietnamese Community Centre, Inala.
About 50 young people came from the Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Hispano American, Sudanese (Annerley) and African (Logan) communities.
They had a chance to consider and share “about their personal relationship with God” and “interact with each other through fun and games, music and prayer”, a spokesperson said.
Ethnic Ministers Group chairperson, Bowen Hills parish priest, Polish Community Chaplain and caretaker of the EYMC Fr Sylvester Karasiuk celebrated Mass for the group in the afternoon.
The Hispano American youth group led the worship for the Mass while Fr Karasiuk and Chinese community Chaplain Fr Albert Chan offered the Sacrament of Penance.
Feedback from the day was positive with many participants admitting it was their first youth retreat.
Suggested future retreat themes are “Catechism – Teachings of the Church”, “The life and spirituality of a favourite saint” and “Ways to improve our youth Mass”.
The retreat was the third event organised for the year by the EYMC – a group of varying cultures and ages aiming to meet the spiritual needs of Brisbane’s multicultural young people.
