THERE’S no doubt that the teenage years are a time of angst for parents and teenagers alike.
There is one way, however, to help both parties relieve some of the stress and for parents and educators it has proven to be very “user-friendly”.
Experienced Brisbane counsellor, mother of three and woman of faith Kym Keady has introduced the program “Real Talk” with the desire to spread a message of hope to teens about their sexuality.
“Real Talk is an opportunity for young people to hear what God really wants for them and to appreciate their sexuality in all its wholeness,” Kym said.
She accepts invitations from schools and youth groups to address classes and other gatherings, often as part of personal development programs or retreat experiences.
Karen Mulcahy, of Brigidine College, Indooroopilly, was quick to sing the praises of the initiative.
“I was impressed with Kym’s commitment, enthusiasm and the engaging way she worked with my girls.
“Despite the opposite message being presented by the popular culture, the students willingly listened to Kym’s message,” Mrs Mulcahy said.
Kym’s “message” is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “It is imperative to give suitable and timely instruction to young people, above all in the heart of their own families, about the dignity of married love, its role and its exercise” (article 1632).
Topics covered touch on the themes of personal uniqueness, being equipped with wisdom and self-control, the truth about abortion, myths of contraception as well as practical steps about dress, words and actions.
