A COMMITTEE which spent the past 12 months trying to compile a “big picture” of Brisbane archdiocese’s youth services presented its report to Bishop Michael Putney during July.
The committee was set up following the Australian bishops’ dialogue with youth a few years ago.
A 1996 report, Lean on Me, was an interim reflection on what the bishops were hearing from youth Australia-wide.
A final report, as a result of consultations, called Young People and the Future, was issued in April last year.
Since then the Brisbane committee has been doing an analysis of gaps in archdiocesan and parish agencies and groups, and of their knowledge of and response to the 19 recommendations in last year’s report.
The report found that there is considerable work being done in the archdiocese on many of the recommendations (but) it is often fragmented with agencies and groups being unaware of other efforts. Many people were simply unaware of the report.
The committee contacted all archdiocesan groups which have anything to do with youth in the context of the categories in the report, Young People and the Future.
Parish Youth Ministry Services co-ordinator Michael Hart, who worked on the report, said it had been commissioned by Bishop Putney as a way of analysing what is being done for young people in the archdiocese.
“It’s one of the steps towards finding outcomes in terms of what is happening, but also what could happen in the future. It’s a valuable resource for future planning.”
The recommendations of the report are to be put into usable form for parishes and organisations.
