Honoured: Charles McCarthy recognised by a special presentation from Brisbane Legacy representative, Gavin White, at St Vincent’s Care Services Gympie.

EX-serviceman, Charles McCarthy, recently reached an incredible milestone – 65 years of service to Legacy.

This anniversary was recognised by a special presentation from Brisbane Legacy representative, Gavin White, at St Vincent’s Care Services Gympie, where Charles resides in Respite Care.

Charles first joined Legacy in 1949, but his association with this voluntary organisation began 10 years earlier when his father, Stan McCarthy, died.

Stan had fought for Australia in the First World War, and on his death, his mother Gladys became a Legacy widow, making Charles a Legacy Ward at age 16.

Charles experienced the goodwill and support of Legacy first-hand and after himself serving in Second World War, he decided to give back to other ex-servicemen and their families.

He has been actively involved with Legacy in Inverell, Toowoomba, Stanthorpe, Brisbane, Beaudesert and now Gympie.

When Charles moved into St Vincent’s Care Services’ Gympie facility, he was determined to continue his involvement with the organisation.

“Legacy has always been a priority in my life. It’s as important now as it was after the war”, the 91-year old said.

Staff at St Vincent’s Care Services, Gympie have been instrumental in facilitating Charles’ long-standing connection to Legacy.

They encourage him to meet with the Legacy representative who regularly visits the facility, and they help him attend Legacy meetings.

St Vincent’s Care Services Queensland general manager Peter Worboyes said fostering this kind of connection was a priority for St Vincent’s Care Services staff.

“It’s so important for residents like Charles to stay involved with groups and activities that have been a part of their lives before joining our facilities,” he said.

“We do whatever we can to encourage and support residents to pursue their individual interests, and we help them stay connected and up-to-date.”

Most St Vincent’s Care Services facilities are equipped with computer hubs for resident use. Staff assist residents to access information, updates and newsletters from the groups or associations they belong to on the internet or via email.
