Yes, Damien MacGinley, (Letters, CL 12/7/09) the US President’s pro-abortion stance is disgusting, but it is no different from that of our own Federal Government.
One of Barack Obama’s first acts as President was to rescind George W Bush’s order which banned the use of US foreign aid funds for abortions.
In March, 2009, the Rudd Government in Canberra overturned the Howard government’s 13-year-long ban on Australian foreign aid being used for abortions.
It also resolved to provide additional funding of up to $15 million for “family planning and reproductive health activities” (read “contraceptive and abortion activities”) via United Nations agencies and NGOs.
As prominent “Catholic” politicians led this charge, it’s small wonder that many rank-and-file “Catholics” believe that a pregnant woman has an inherent right to kill the babe within her womb if she so chooses.
For decades only deafening silence has emanated from our parish pulpits on this monstrous abomination which the Church can never condone.
Unless and until our clergy again spell out the teaching of the Church unambiguously and regularly to their flocks, the disciples of the culture of death will continue to hold sway in Western society.
