Thank you Fr Pat Stratford for your article (CL October 31) aimed at all those responsible for moulding the lives of our young adults.
The statistics outlined provide a sobering message to many who have adopted the worldly view of “try before we buy”.
In encouraging our young to question all teachings, we often overlook the scriptural teachings which provide all the answers for them, especially in relation to the vocation of marriage – the major commitment most of us make.
“Choice” also requires a commitment.
It suggests that we are well informed of all the consequences before we make one.
I would encourage all schools to include his guidelines in their religious teachings.
Of course it is hoped that parents will also accept the challenge to share their commitment of married life – or at least their expectations.
In this way we may be able to encourage a life of love, generosity and forgiveness and stem the destructive example of instability in families created by separation and divorce.
