I AGREE with Selina Venier’s praise of traditional hymns in the Mass (Family Faith, CL 8/7/12).
Many of today’s “sacro-pops” at Mass lack the depth of spiritual impact and outreach which is so strongly present in many of those great hymns of the 18th and 19th centuries.
They so often express the inexpressible because they are inspired and timeless.
Traditional church music lifts a worshipper to the Sublime as little else does because it facilitates that reflective mood so helpful in lifting the mind to God.
I think our Church would much benefit by making greater use of traditional hymns not only because of their spiritual outreach and continuity with past generations, but also because many of them are so widely known that congregations seem to respond more effectively to them.
