IN his encycical Deus Caritas Est (God is Love), Pope Benedict XVI encouraged lay Catholics to participate in public life to promote the common good.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s 2020 Summit on April 19 and 20 would seem an ideal opportunity for that kind of participation.
Regardless of our politics, this summit is an opportunity to make sure the Church’s voice on a wide range of issues is heard. Even though only 1000 people will be attending, there is provision for individuals and organisations to make submissions.
The 10 “critical areas” include issues of particular concern for the Church, and this is a chance to influence decision-making in the light of Gospel values.
