I CANNOT agree with the full text of Rikki Halloran’s letter (CL 16/12/07).
Yes, Jesus is true God and true man. However, I would amend the text to read “God revealed himself to us as man (ie mankind, which includes both male and female) in the person of the male Jesus Christ, who is true God and true man.
But, why believe the angels are male? Many believe the Catholic Church to be a male-dominated institution eg women cannot be ordained as priests (perhaps, because one cannot address a woman as “father”) – but why must angels be male?
I always understood them to be spirits and therefore of no specific gender.
No disrespect intended, but in any pictorial depictions of the Archangel Gabriel, he always looked feminine to me with long hair and robe – perhaps the name was misspelt and should be Gabrielle!
As for all of us “being like the angels one day, that is, male” – heaven forbid!
Should I one day be blessed by reunion in Heaven with my mate of nigh on 60 years, I want it to be with my darling wife and not with a “mate” – in the Australian vernacular!
