IT was so refreshing to read the story in a recent edition of The Australian newspaper concerning the three American nuns who have taken up residency in St Mary MacKillop’s old convents in South Australia.
These women are setting a new and much needed pace for the Church.
Their image as they go about doing the work of God whilst dressed in their religious habits is perhaps a sign from St Mary herself that a clearer presence of “the Church” in our society is essential rather than it being conveniently “hidden away”.
It is reported that this order of nuns is attracting new recruits at a fairly impressive rate.
Why? The answer is clear.
If our police and military members did not dress in uniform when on duty then what would be the result?
General mayhem and worse I would suggest.
There has never been a more appropriate time for the Church to review its policy regarding the dress requirements of all religious.
God’s messengers need to gain ground in our society, not keep losing it!
