I WOULD like to say a big thank-you to everyone who assisted the city of Ipswich during the flood in January 2011.
St Joseph’s school hall, North Ipswich, was set up as an evacuation centre at the last minute on the Tuesday afternoon after news was received that the Bremer River was to peak at 22m.
The centre was quickly established without any fuss and with sheer precision, and could not have been done without the help of many.
I particularly would like to acknowledge the tireless work of former principal Kevin Bianchi, deputy Gerard Gimpel, members of the St Joseph’s parish, Parents and Friends, Red Cross, and members of the wider community who provided unwavering support to myself and the community day and night during this crisis.
With about five per cent of the Ipswich population directly effected by flooding, the hall provided accommodation and comfort for about 130 people and their animals.
The generosity of the community was on show during this difficult period. They gave their time, food, clothing and provided spiritual guidance to those who had lost all of their possessions.
As the local councillor for this area I am so proud of everyone who came forward to help the flood-affected people of Ipswich and my heartfelt thanks goes out to you all.
