EVERY practising Catholic in our nation, and in the world, would have listened to St Matthew’s gospel read at Mass recently (7/9/08 – 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year A, Matthew 18:15-20).
In the context of the current controversy involving the Brisbane archdiocesan Catholic community and the community of St Mary’s, South Brisbane, the gospel reading is a wonderful expression of the common sense and inspired wisdom required in addressing such situations.
Using Australian language in prophetic symbolism I see the St Mary’s community of the future, if it continues to exist at all in its present expression, as becoming a “Billabong” community.
The “mainstream” Catholic Church will have passed it by as salvation history continues to unfold in our nation.
