IT’S no surprise that Edmund Rice Centre director Phil Glendenning is nervous about the Federal Government’s latest announcements about asylum-seeker policies relat-ing to people from Afghanistan (page 1).
His experience tells him that faulty decisions about returning asylum seekers to their country of origin with assurances that it was safe to do so can have tragic results.
Having known Afghan asylum seekers who have been returned from Australia only to be killed, Mr Glendenning has every reason to be wary of the latest policy developments.
He is working on behalf of the Church to ensure asylum seekers are given proper consideration for protection and compassion, and do not become the victims of politically expedient decisions.
