THE problem of poverty in Australia does not ordinarily get much prominence in the mainstream media.
But when the major parties start taking an interest, there is sure to be jockeying for brownie points, especially in the last 12 months before a federal election.
Poverty is not a political football. It is a reality to thousands of Australians.
The way to address the problem is not through making election promises which may or may not be fulfilled, but by facing the issue on a bipartisan level.
Calling a poverty summit would be a good starting point.
