TWO Catholic school students have died as a result of the meningococcal infection in Queensland and there have been cases reported in at least three other Catholic schools, yet health authorities are still denying there is any reason to be concerned.
Many parents must be worried following the extensive media coverage this disease has received, fearing that their son or daughter could be at risk.
While some of these fears may be unrealistic, questions need to be asked about the way health authorities are underplaying the seriousness of the situation.
Even a handful of deaths in Queensland each year from meningococcal is too many in a country such as ours.
Parents deserve to be fully informed of the true extent of the risk to their children.
