IN the last federal election in the electorate of Longman, which includes Caboolture and Bribie Island, many of us Catholics voted for the Liberal candidate Wyatt Roy, partly because of his party’s strong stand in favour of traditional marriage.
Recently we discovered that Mr Roy has changed his mind and he now supports same-sex “marriage”.
About 12 of us parishioners from St Eugene Church, Burpengary, met with him in his office in the hope of changing his mind.
He refused to consider our arguments for traditional marriage while claiming that he had consulted people of his electorate on this issue.
However, not one of us had been asked about our views on marriage prior to his announcement of support for same-sex “marriage”.
We felt that he has betrayed us, the people of his electorate, as all of us supported him in the last federal election and several of us worked for him actively in his campaign.
We feel that he has also betrayed his leader Tony Abbott, who is against same-sex “marriage”.
After the meeting all 12 attendees said that, as Catholics, we will not vote for him this time.
