Marian Pilgrimage

ON May 27 I had the privilege of being a pilgrim – along with approximately 1000 others – to Marian Valley, Canungra to celebrate the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, the Patroness of Australia.

That day the newly constructed Shrine of Blessed Mary MacKillop was blessed by Bishop John Gerry. It was a truly blessed day.

I have mentioned the shrine to friends, relatives and parishioners and have found that many people have never heard of it. Hence the purpose of this letter.

Marian Valley is situated in a picturesque valley surrounded by towering basalt cliffs, with a backdrop of Australian subtropical bushland, resounding with the songs of a variety of birds. It is only one hour’s drive from Brisbane off Beechmont Rd (8 kms from Canungra travelling towards Beechmont). The Marian shrine, officially called Shrine of Our Lady Help of Christians is an approved shrine of Brisbane archdiocese, being opened by the late Most Rev Bishop Cuskelly on December 10, 1995.

The main chapel known as the Black Madonna Chapel has a seating capacity of 500. Dotted around the valley are 10 shrines. Pilgrims can stroll around to reflect, pray and absorb its peace and tranquility.

The shrine is under the care of the Order of St Paul the First Hermit. Two resident priests are available to discuss a possible pilgrimage and to ensure that dates do not encroach on any parish commitments – phone (07) 5533 3617. This would be a beautiful place of prayer and devotion for prayer groups or groups from parishes seeking a place for a pilgrimage during this Year of Great Jubilee – the Year of Pilgrimages! Marian Valley is there to be discovered.
