SKYROCKETING real estate prices in Brisbane in the past few years have resulted in the closure of many inner city boarding houses.
This has not helped the homelessness problem in the city.
Many of these homeless people live on the streets of the CBD, and welcome the visits by outreach volunteers who offer a hot drink and a warm hand of friendship.
Charities such as St Vincent de Paul and Rosies Youth Mission do a sterling job in caring for the homeless through this outreach.
A proposal to stop their vans from visiting the homeless in the city centre is not the way to alleviate the problem of homelessness.
It merely seeks to make the homeless less visible.
Out of sight, out of mind will never solve the problem.
