THE push by the Queensland Government to reform the state’s anti-discrimination laws has demonstrated a lack of consideration for the rights of all Church and religious groups.
The absence of any consultation before the proposed amendments were tabled in Parliament has been disappointing.
Time is running out to have a say on this issue. With the Government hoping to rush this legislation through Parliament before the Christmas break it is critical that Catholics send a message to their state MP about their views on this issue.
Only then will the voice of all Queenslanders be heard – and hopefully heeded.
PS: The Catholic Leader rejected a full-page advertisement from the Queensland Government in this week’s print edition of this newspaper.
The advertisement was in relation to how the proposed amendments to the state’s anti-discrimination laws would affect the Catholic Church and other members of the community.
After viewing the advertisement, The Leader believes it would have been premature to run it while discussions are continuing between the Church and the Government on a number of contentious aspects of the bill.
This does not preclude The Leader from accepting an advertisement on this matter from the Queensland Government at a later date.
