THE convocation of a synod for Brisbane archdiocese is a major opportunity to examine and set the future direction of the local Church.
Synods have been a rare phenomenon in the Australian Church but they have worked successfully in a number of countries.
The synod is a chance to get back to the basics of the Church’s mission.
As Archbishop John Bathersby states in his convocation, it will allow a re-acquaintance with the spiritual treasure the Church offers, respond to the needs of the people of God and the Church’s outreach, look at and respond to the needs of young people, and aim to nurture priestly and lay vocations.
These are all areas which are of vital importance in the Church’s mission in the 21st century.
Gathering to discuss these issues will help to create a greater awareness of the needs among all sections of the local Church.
The Year of Great Jubilee is an apt time to start the journey towards the synod in 2003.
Every step of the way will be important in the ultimate success of this important event in the history of the archdiocese.
