THE Churches have been a vocal force for change in societal attitudes to social justice issues such as racism and the treatment of indigenous people in recent years.
Yet, within some ranks, there are still lingering signs of intolerance and lack of respect for others.
As the “Building Bridges” conference in Sydney last weekend heard, there is room for improvement.
To its credit, the Catholic Church is facing up to these challenges in a number of areas.
The embracing of indigenous reconciliation, the Church’s work with migrants and the attempt to improve women’s participation in the Church are three areas that come immediately to mind.
The journey to justice on these and other issues must not be allowed to waver.
