ANYONE who was educated by the brothers would have probably received part of their initiation into life through sport, in particular rugby union.
It is this initiation that has helped build the rugby tradition in Australia and one of the reasons why this country has such a strong presence in the sport.
Catholicism and rugby are powerful allies. The teamwork and bonding that characterises the sport is also a part of the Catholic faith of many of the players who played and were educated through Catholic schools.
So Australia’s role as host of the Rugby World Cup is a good reason to mix a little religion with a little sport.
Whatever the final result, may those involved in providing a Christian outreach during the Rugby World Cup Christian be successful in reminding both players and supporters of their God-given gifts through the sport it is said is played in heaven.
