THE St Vincent de Paul Society has a proud record of helping those who are struggling in the community.
But the society’s sterling work and generosity should not be a justification for the Federal Government to transfer its responsibility for welfare to the Churches and other non-government agencies.
The policy of “mutual obligation” has been bandied about the Government as a panacea for welfare reform.
Leaving responsibility for welfare to Church and private agencies is not what mutual obligation should be about.
