AS Victorians live with the pain of the bushfires tragedy, the rest of Australia stands by them, ready to help in any way possible.

The tragedy is mentioned several times through this edition, including our Page 1 story, telling of how generously people of all ages are responding to the need that has touched them so deeply.

Caritas Australia chief executive officer Jack de Groot (Page 12) comments on how we need to hang on to that compassion for all people in need.

Columnist Selina Venier (Page 17) tells of how our children are affected, and liturgist Elizabeth Harrington links the bushfires disaster to Ash Wednesday.
