IT is next to impossible to totally keep drugs out of schools.
Even the idea of drug testing students has a limited effect.
Drug tests and zero tolerance only drive the problem underground and leads to students being isolated from the support they need.
The way to handle the drug use issue is to educate young people in the dangers of this practice and to offer a helping hand to those who may be caught in the grip of abuse.
Most Catholic schools are well placed to offer pastoral care and the necessary support to discourage students from taking drugs, and many already do.
