A PROPOSAL to build another detention centre, possibly on Brisbane’s outskirts, is not going to solve the problem of what to do with the growing number of asylum seekers arriving in Australia.
The idea would only aggravate the unrest being seen at existing detention centres and prolong the inhumanity of keeping these people locked up for extended periods.
Preliminary efforts by the Federal Government to remove women and children asylum seekers from detention centres should be expanded and these people should be placed in the community with proper financial and other support until their cases have been examined.
Another detention centre would do nothing to reverse the “lock-and-key” approach to dealing with refugees.
