SINCE the historical speech by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, which marked a new beginning, much has been said and written about past events and hurts in the lives of our indigenous brothers and sisters.
A comment made recently by a holy and dedicated priest, struck a chord, when he simply set all politics aside and spoke of the dedication and service by many religious to the indigenous and others in the Northern Territory.
His order, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, has marked 100 years of service in that apostolate and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart will also achieve a like milestone this year.
Not that either would seek recognition – they have humbly embraced a life of service.
The fact that their apostolate to the indigenous people still continues today having seen through the good times and bad, is both a sign and source of great inner strength and commitment.
Pope John Paul II, during his visit to Australia, had expressed his feelings loud and clear, assisting in raising the profile of the indigenous people’s cause.
Only those who play a direct role can take us forward but we should not allow such selfless sacrifices to go unacknowledged.
