GAMBLING is a favourite pastime in Australia, has been for a long time.
Many of us love to have a flutter on the races – dogs, horses, trots – sometimes it doesn’t matter which. And, most of the time it’s a bit of harmless fun.
For some of us though, it may start out as fun but becomes a curse. They are the people who are addicted, and Queensland Churches have received reports that the number of Queenslanders whose lives are being haunted by this addiction could number as many as 80,000 to 120,000. The figure is staggering.
Church leaders are to be commended for trying to tackle the problem. Because many people, including our governments, are benefitting from the proceeds, this could be a tough assignment. Our Church leaders will need support.
