IT is very timely that the Pope has brought the subject of abortion to our attention (“Abortion a crime against all”, CL 11/12/05).
Here in Australia we seem to be more concerned about the method and the execution (which I totally abhor) of a convicted drug courier than execution of an estimated 100,000 innocent babies each year.
Recently I read that a live baby was found in a waste bin outside Sydney`s Westmead Hospital, and in Darwin a perfect baby girl was placed in a dish where she cried for 80 minutes before she died.
Both the result of botched abortions.
Both coroners were told there were other similar live births not reported. Doctors in Britain have warned there are up to 50 live births per year in similarely botched abortions.
One wonders how many in Australia.
I believe all states in Australia have a Births, Deaths, Marriage Act requiring all births and deaths to be registered.
These hideous events are not registered, hence covered up.
The other aspect of these inhumane acts is that I believe there is a serious legal obligation on the doctor to medically attempt to save the child.
Last month a Sydney abortionist was charged with manslaughter which she denied.
I trust that all media, especially the Catholic media of Australia, will give maximum coverage as it has of the recent execution in Singapore.
